May 13, 2025 /CSRwire/ - Yum! Brands has long prioritized the integration of sustainable practices into its development strategy. If it was simply good for the environment, it’d be a nice-to-have, but the parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Habit Burger &amp; Grill has identified both economical and eco-friendly ways to outfit its restaurants. In other words, Yum! believes that building green can help to save green.

Here's how the company does it.

In 2014, Yum! adopted sustainable development guidelines for its restaurants that have since influenced its brands’ current standards. These guidelines took inspiration from the <a href="https://www.usgbc.org/leed" target="_blank">Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program</a> and include aspects like strategically placed exhaust hoods and using appropriate lighting. But where they differ from LEED is that the Yum! guidelines leverage a scaled point system more specific to the quick-service restaurant industry with the goal of building more sustainable, energy efficient restaurants.

Chief Sustainability Officer Jon Hixson. “Thankfully, most of the methods we’ve identified are both good for the environment and for business.”

Recently, the brands took these guidelines one step further, with KFC evolving its Building Green Standards through the introduction of its 11 must-haves and Pizza Hut developing its Green Hut Toolkit with its own set of requirements. These standards, built on the foundation of sustainability and resilience, are aimed at being a win-win that helps conserve resources while saving franchisees money.

A similar list applies to KFC’s set of standards. Habit Burger &amp; Grill, headquartered in California, is committed to ensuring that all U.S.-based restaurants meet or exceed the California Green Building Standards Code, the first-in-the-nation mandatory green building standards code.

Successful examples range from the obvious – LED lighting that led to emissions cuts of about 5% on average across the KFC restaurant portfolio in 2024 – to focusing on HVAC systems that enable a single Pizza Hut location to achieve around 30% in energy savings and prevent approximately 7 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

The brands also continue to evolve their standards. In 2023, KFC introduced its Green Line Furniture, which is developed and finished using recovered materials while maintaining performance and durability. In addition to the pieces of furniture being more sustainable, they also weigh significantly less, which means transportation of furniture to the restaurants generates fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions – approximately 32% less!

Around the world, Energy Management Systems (EMS) are utilized by the brands to optimize operations and identify areas for further improvement. EMS provide monitoring and control services to maintain temperature and humidity in restaurants, as well as automatically adjust energy usage and identify issues or opportunities for optimization. In India, for example, EMS have been installed in 315 Pizza Hut and over 500 KFC restaurants resulting in approximately 7% savings on KFC’s electricity bill. Other brands and markets have seen similar results. Taco Bell U.S. also uses EMS to automatically control the temperatures in its HVAC and walk-in refrigerators in approximately 150 corporate locations in the highest energy use markets.

KFC has solar panels on every continent that it operates, including one KFC in California, which operates its drive-thru entirely on solar power, saving its franchisee 20% off its energy costs.

These standards and additional efforts have helped Yum! earn external climate recognition from groups like CDP, a global organization that runs a leading sustainability disclosure system, as well as restaurants around the world becoming LEED-certified, including KFC in Thailand and Pizza Hut in Vietnam, and a KFC restaurant receiving Gold certification from India’s Green Building Council.

Because of this work, Yum! has made steady progress on its <a href="https://www.yum.com/wps/portal/yumbrands/Yumbrands/impact/planet/climate-action/" target="_blank">science-based climate targets</a>. At the end of 2023, the company achieved a 28% reduction of GHG emissions per franchisee restaurants compared to 2019, and Yum! continues to see cost savings through a range of technologies and programs.

“We’ve committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions per franchise restaurant by 46% by 2030, and we’re more than halfway to this target, thanks to our green building efforts,” Hixson said. “By saving our franchisees money and conserving energy, it’s a win for the company and our planet.”

The word “archive” is often associated with past, dead things. The preservation of endless stacks of paper files with unintelligible words and video footage wrapped around old projector wheels whose technology is long lost to history. Collections of slides in mislabeled bags and boxes — that seem to dissolve in our very hands — full of trinkets, tchotchkes, and the miscellaneous parts to those trinkets and tchotchkes. Obscure labels, unfamiliar names and irrelevant places that, to the untrained eye, mean little. And all these, we imagine, are being dusted off and sorted by their keeper, the archivist, who is buried below the mountains of past, dead things.

But not Lori.

Cummins Heritage Center’s lead archivist, Lori Ann Lindberg, paints an entirely different picture.

Archivists, Lori argues, have a way of looking into the future by using objects from the past — something important and timely for a company like Cummins, which continues to push the industry forward with first-of-its-kind technologies and products. Every day, Lori discovers new stories about Cummins’ 106-year history. Many of these reaffirm the values, innovations and aspirations the company continues to uphold and practice today.

Irwin Miller, a former president and chairman of Cummins for over 40 years.

While serving as the 1963 President of the National Council of Churches, he and the Council co-sponsored Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington. At the time, a potential investor wrote to Miller, expressing displeasure over Cummins’ hiring of people of color and other marginalized groups. In response, Miller firmly stated that he would not stop hiring these individuals — all types of people worked at Cummins, and that was the way it would remain. He emphasized that this diversity contributed to Cummins’ success. Miller concluded his letter by suggesting that the investor should consider placing their money elsewhere.

“That letter resonated with me, and I just got so emotional reading it because it’s at least 70 years old now. It shows that this is Cummins, this is the way Cummins is and the way it’s going to stay,” Lori says. “And it’s one of the things that I love about this company, and the fact that I can keep that evidence is just a point of pride to me.”

If you’ve ever had the privilege of visiting Lori and the Cummins Heritage Center, you know that Lori has a special way of taking you along with her into Cummins' past. She knows nearly all there is to know about Cummins, though she would refute such a statement and argue that there’s much more she has left to uncover.

The Center is surrounded by — sturdy — boxes of Cummins magazines, training manuals, letters, photos and plaques, with nearly every wall covered in vintage Cummins advertisements, posters and banners. There are tables with old engine schematics and components renderings, and cabinets full of global gifts, pins and paperweights. Just when you think you’ve seen all there is to see, a row of engines, from Cummins’ first to nearly every decade after, leads you toward the restoration side of the Center. It’s here where Cummins’ litany of Indianapolis 500 race cars, a 1938 Cadillac, and a 1935 Auburn, receive their fine-tuning.

Lori’s path to becoming an archivist began in music. Lori graduated from Indiana University’s School of Music, now Jacobs School of Music, studying opera theater. Growing up in Indiana, Lori sprang at the opportunity to explore the states and headed to Southern California. After several years in Los Angeles, Lori eventually found her home in San Francisco. It was here that she began working for a record store chain and soon developed a passion for organizing while sorting through crates of music records.

And I found that passion,” she says. “I just, you know, I love it.”

That passion led to Lori receiving her Master of Library and Information Science, and for many years, Lori worked at various big corporations as their archivist while teaching scholars the art of archiving. Her work teaching led her to create the first master’s program in the country for Archives and Records Administration.

She had a feeling, though, that the company was Cummins, as it had just celebrated its centennial anniversary. Lori was right, and the rest was, well, history. Lori began as a contractor before officially joining Cummins full-time in 2023.

You didn’t grow up in the automotive industry and not know about Cummins.”

It was the coolest thing. So, I always had a great impression of Cummins from very young.”

She often attends meetings across Cummins’ Business Units, actively hunting for new information to add to the collection. These meetings give her a look into the future, allowing her to stay on the pulse of where Cummins is heading.

They want to portray Cummins’ true story most accurately.

“I hope that the Cummins Heritage Center really reflects the many positive aspects of the company, as well as the great influence of Cummins,” Lori expresses, “not only on its industry through its products but through its people and with its people and on its people.”

When future leaders and archivists are collecting Cummins artifacts, they won’t need a magnifying glass to see that Lori was one of the people whose passion for the company captured and created a legacy.

From spring through fall, the programs will start or expand youth gardens and green spaces. Selections for the 2025 GroMoreGood grant recipients were based upon the learning impact, including factors such as individual program participants, prior funding and socioeconomic reach, among others.

But this mission goes far beyond trees. Through its <a href="https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/new-jersey/stories-in-new-jersey/urban-conservation-cities-program/" target="_blank">Greening Our Cities</a> program, The Nature Conservancy is weaving nature into the fabric of urban life – helping communities adapt to the environment with science-backed, nature-based solutions.

The Arbor Day Foundation

<a href="https://www.arborday.org/about%22%20/t%20%22_blank" target="_blank">The Arbor Day Foundation</a> is spreading the power of trees around the world—one neighborhood, park and backyard at a time.

They don’t just talk the talk – they plant it. Since the foundations’ inception in 1972, more than 500 million trees have been planted across over 60 countries, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. Their next goal? Another half a billion trees planted by 2027!

And there’s more: Earlier this month, we joined forces with the Arbor Day Foundation and the NJ Tree Foundation to plant 40 trees at Cadwalader Park in Trenton. <a href="https://www.arborday.org/value#%3A~%3Atext=Trees%20help%20us%20save%20energy%2C%E2%80%9350%25%20on%20heating%20costs." target="_blank">According to the Arbor Day Foundation</a>, properly placed trees around buildings can significantly reduce energy consumption, cutting air conditioning needs by 30% and saving 20–50% on heating costs. Not only that, but trees reap benefits for the entire neighborhood, including cleaner and cooler air, less flooding and more beauty all around.

Longstanding financial inequities have limited their growth, yet they remain driven, with 66% seeking financial knowledge and 65% looking to financial institutions for solutions.

Underbanked consumers are a diverse and dynamic group. They are early adopters of technology, embracing AI, digital finance, and open banking solutions. Mental health is also a priority, with financial stability playing a crucial role in their well-being.

Building trust is key for underbanked consumers as 65% would like financial institutions to help address financial inequities, yet more than half also feel taken advantage of by the financial system.

About 85% of underbanked consumers rely on debit cards, a significantly higher rate than the general population, presenting a unique opportunity for financial growth. By helping this underserved group transition to credit, we can facilitate new possibilities for financial access.

Underbanked individuals carry significant responsibilities. Many have fewer resources that need to stretch farther. Stress and anxiety weigh on them, which is why underbanked consumers prioritize their mental health more than most, and nearly half have a near-term personal goal to improve their mental health (39% higher than the total population).

The financial uncertainty for some underbanked consumers stems from childhoods of poverty — 64% lived in households of low socioeconomic brackets as children, vs. 46% among the total U.S. However, they are pursuing education and professional growth at rates two times higher than the general population, and two out of three are seeking more financial knowledge to gain control over their personal situation.

Addressing their needs requires a tailored approach focused on trust, access, usage, health and education. Through our Powering Prosperity framework, we have identified three key personas within the underbanked segment, each with unique aspirations and challenges. Debit products provide an entry point for engagement, while education and personalized financial tools can help bridge gaps in financial literacy and access.

The opportunity is clear: By fostering trust and offering targeted solutions, we can empower underbanked consumers to achieve financial stability. Now is the time to reshape financial inclusion and build lasting relationships with this growing audience.
